A Plan For The World's Tallest Wood SkyscraperLook at this futuristic skyscraper design! Construction for it would dump less CO2 into the atmosphere than traditional steel construction! It'd be cheaper to build! It'd be made out of--uh wood actually. The proposed design from architecture firm C. F. Møller would be the world's tallest wood skyscraper and go up in Stockholm by 2023. In fact at 34 stories the building would totally dwarf the plan for America's tallest wood building which will stand at a mere six stories. There are at least a couple potential upsides to making a skyscraper with wood. For one thing the CO2 released by manufacturing wood for building is less than it is for concrete or steel. Since its lighter than those materials wood also costs a lot less to transport. (Plus: look at the interior! It's like living in a modern treehouse.)The building wouldn't be made completely of wood: the architects are planning on giving the building a concrete core and installing glass windows. Which is good since I think wood windows are just called doors.[via Curbed]I live on the top floor of a 4 floor wood frame apartment. It is 2 years old and problems are appearing already. Some due to settling but some also because of wood shrinkage/fasteners loosening. Most of the tenants have diminished hearing(deaf)and cannot hear as well as I can. I hear the people on either side and below. I do not hear voices but all low sounds such as doors/cupboards being closed reverberate through the wood infrastructure. If I ever move again it will be to a concrete/steel apartment. Wood may be light and cheaper but not as silent as concrete and steel.Wonder how it would respond to a little fire. Looks like a fairly impressive setup for a bonfire or would it be considered a pyre since it's occupied? I've known a house down the street that caught fire cause someone fell asleep on the couch with a lit cigarette in hand. A small fire in the lower reaches would light this torch brilliantly.Has the decision been made over which forest they will cut down to come up w/ all this wood? That's what I was going to say Pioneer tear down the rainforest home to many billions of creatures to make an apartment building for a few thousand. Makes sense! NOTFor tall buildings steel and concrete are the most economical and structurally efficient materials to use.Termitetopia.
